Most people assume penis size comes from the father's side. After all, dads have penises. The logic seems obvious. But genetics doesn't work that way โ and the real answer makes for a much more interesting Thanksgiving conversation than anyone wants to have.
Dad's Y chromosome decides whether you develop a penis. Mom's X chromosome has a much larger influence on how big that penis becomes.
This isn't speculation. It's chromosomal math.
The X chromosome has roughly 20 times more genes than the Y. Among them are genes that control how your body uses testosterone during development โ which is what actually drives genital growth from puberty onward. Having tons of testosterone means nothing if your androgen receptors (coded on the X chromosome from mom) don't respond to it effectively.
This is the part that puzzles people who don't know the genetics. If penis size came mostly from dad, all brothers would be roughly the same size. They're clearly not.
Same dad, same Y chromosome โ but different X chromosomes from mom. Xโ might carry genes for a larger penis. Xโ might carry genes for an average one. The random selection of which X each son gets is the coin flip that determines much of the size difference.
"Since boys always inherit the X chromosome from the mother and the selection of that X chromosome is random, this can explain why one brother may have inherited genes for a large penis from one of the mother's X chromosomes, but another brother inherited an average-size penis from the other."

Before you go blaming (or thanking) your mother entirely, it's more nuanced than "all mom."
"There are some genes in the Y chromosome that have links to penile lengths and size," notes urologist Jamin Brahmbhatt, MD. "So you can't entirely blame your mom for your small penis."
The Y chromosome's SRY gene launches the development of the testes, which produce testosterone. And the quantity and timing of that testosterone matters. But even with perfect testosterone levels, the response to that testosterone โ governed by the androgen receptor gene on mom's X โ is what translates hormonal signals into actual tissue growth.
Paduch also notes the general trend: "If a father has a bigger penis, the son's will probably be similar in length." This suggests autosomal genes (the 22 non-sex chromosomes, inherited from both parents) also contribute to size, not just the sex chromosomes.
The most accurate way to think about it: Dad provides the Y chromosome that starts penis development and contributes general body-frame genetics. Mom provides the X chromosome with the androgen receptor gene and most size-influencing genes. Both parents contribute through the 22 autosomal chromosomes. But if you had to pick one parent with more influence on size specifically, the evidence points to mom's X.
Beyond which genes you inherit, when those genes activate matters enormously. Much of your penis size trajectory is set during a narrow window in the womb.
This means your mother's environment during pregnancy โ what she ate, what chemicals she was exposed to, her stress levels โ directly influenced your penile development. Studies have shown that women with higher levels of phthalate metabolites (from plastics) during pregnancy gave birth to sons with shorter penile length.
Here's one more twist. Every human carries approximately 200 "de novo" mutations โ genes that are slightly different from either parent's version, arising from random variation during development.
This means your penis could look generally like your dad's design (similar family frame, body type) but differ in specific ways โ length, girth, curvature, proportions โ simply because of spontaneous genetic variation that nobody controlled or inherited.
Your penis size is the result of: (1) Mom's X chromosome genes, especially the androgen receptor, (2) Dad's Y chromosome initiating development, (3) Both parents' autosomal genes contributing to body frame and general sizing, (4) Fetal hormone exposure during weeks 8โ12, (5) Mom's chemical environment during pregnancy, (6) ~200 random de novo mutations, and (7) Nutrition and hormonal health during childhood and puberty. No single factor determines the outcome. But if one parent deserves the bigger credit (or blame), it's probably mom.
